Family Integration > Schooling

An admissions application must be completed to secure a place in a school financed by public funds, i.e. in either a public school or a private subsidised school (escola privada concertada). This application - referred to as pre-inscription - has to be made within a time frame that is officially set each year.

Once the pre-inscription process is closed, the schools are in a position to assess demand. Parents are informed of availability and are asked to confirm if they require a place to be reserved for their child. This process is referred to as registration. Registration (matriculació) must also take place within an officially fixed time frame.

All pupils who require a place in infants', primary or compulsory secondary school, or who wish to study for the batxillerat, enter a vocational training cycle or pursue art and design courses, must complete the pre-incription application. This application must also be completed by pupils who need to change schools or who were not registered for the previous academic year.

What to do? ___________________________________________________________________

What can I do in my country of origin? You can start by investigating schools and deciding which ones are of most interest.

Where can I find out about schools?

This website has a search function for locating Catalan educational centres, including public schools, private subsidised schools, private schools, and international schools.

Pre-inscription

What should I do? An admissions application must be completed to secure a place in a public school or subsidised private school (escola privada concertada) financed by public funds. This pre-inscription application has to be made within a time frame that is officially set each year (see the pre-inscription calendar). Only a single pre-inscription application should completed, in which you should list all educational centres and/or courses of study for your child in order of preference.

No school that receives public funding (i.e. public or private subsidised schools) may accept any payment in return for pre-inscription or place reservation.

If you are interested in a private school for your child, you should contact the school in question directly in order to obtain information on admission regulations. You can find out what is available in terms of private education by accessing the website address provided above.

When should I begin my search? This depends both on the time available to you before you come to Catalonia and the time of year. The process corresponding to each academic year commences in February and is announced in the official gazette (Diari Oficial de la Generalitat de Catalunya, DOGC), although applications may be made throughout the year.

What documentation is required?

A copy of the application form www.gencat.cat/preinscripcio/cas/informacio_llengues.htm available free from any educational centre or from town councils.
Original and photocopy of the family record book (llibre de família) or other equivalent document.
Original and photocopy of passport(s), national ID card(s), or equivalent document(s) identifying a child's parent(s) or guardian(s).
Original and photocopy of vaccination card or equivalent certificate(s).
Original and photocopy of passport(s), national ID card(s), or equivalent document(s) identifying the student, if aged over 14.
Documentary evidence of place of work, if this is the basis on which a particular educational centre is preferred.
Documentary evidence of place of residence (padró). If this address is not that featuring in the identity documentation of the applicant: a) a certificate should be obtained from the corresponding municipal council indicating that the pupil lives in the municipal area with the applicant; and b) documentary evidence should be provided as proof that a change of address has been requested in the official identity documentation.

Where can I obtain further information?

Directly from educational centres. These will be able to provide you with the information you need and with the documentation necessary to complete a pre-inscription application.
From municipal education offices www.gencat.net/preinscripcio/cas/informacio_llengues.htm
These are information offices operated by each local authority.
From the Internet CAT365 at www.cat365.net/Inici/FetsVitals/EstudiariFormar-se/?I=2

Note also that educational centres organise meetings, visits and open days for potential pupils/their parents to learn about the centre, how it functions, the services offered, and about its particular mission.

Registration

What do I need to do to register? Once the pre-inscription process is closed, the schools are in a position to assess demand. Parents are informed of availability and are asked to confirm if they require a place to be reserved for their child. This process is referred to as registration. Registration (matriculació) takes place within an officially fixed time frame.

What documentation is required?

You will need to present the following documentation when registering:

Up-to-date identity documentation featuring your new address.
Original and photocopy of official documentation accrediting a large family (carnet de família nombrosa), if appropriate.
Documentary evidence of financial circumstances, if appropriate (i.e. evidence of receiving social welfare payments).
If appropriate, an official medical certificate as evidence that a pupil requires a special diet as a consequence of a chronic illness affecting his/her digestive, endocrine or metabolic system.

Where should the registration process be completed?

  Directly at the educational centre.

At the education office for the municipality in which the centre is located.

At the schools information office, if your municipality has no education office. Municipal Education Offices

When should I begin the registration process? As soon as you have been informed that your pre-inscription application has been accepted.
