What should I do in my country of origin? Foreigners residing habitually in Catalonia may use various official documents to certify their right to healthcare services.

What should I do once in Catalonia? Present the documentation that certifies that you are entitled to healthcare.

Staff at the National Social Security Institute (INSS) will explain to you how to obtain medical care. Individuals with financial means who are not covered by Social Security will need to provide their bank details to facilitate direct bank debit payments.

What documentation is required?
 A copy of the application form for recognition of your right to medical care, available from the office where you submit your application.
A photocopy of your national identity card, passport or residence permit, and photocopies of the same documents for beneficiaries (for beneficiaries under the age of 14, a photocopy of an official document demonstrating your legal right to represent them).
Proof of residence, and, in the case of minors and/or disabled dependents, a document verifying that they reside with the applicant. Both documents are issued by local councils.
A photocopy of your Spanish health insurance card or individual health card if you have previously been registered for Social Security.
A photocopy of your latest income tax declaration. If you are not obliged to submit an income tax declaration, a sworn declaration of income.
For persons with disabilities greater than 33%, a photocopy of the certificate issued by the Catalan Institute for Health Care (ICASS).
When should I start the process? As soon as possible.

Healthcare coverage: Insured individuals will be covered for immediate medical attention required while in Catalonia. Foreign nationals will be entitled to the exactly same public healthcare as available to Catalan citizens in terms of:
standard and emergency services
hospital admission services
The guidelines that apply to prescription and dispensing of any necessary drugs and health materials are the same as those in effect for users covered by CatSalut.
