Certification of medical insurance for non-EU nationals

Who may need assistance and why? Foreign nationals of non-EU countries who take up residence in Catalonia need to take a number of administrative steps in order to obtain access to the public health system.

What should I do in my country of origin? This depends on your country of origin. We recommend that you check to find out if there is an agreement between your country and Spain. You can do this by contacting the appropriate social security body in your country, or by visiting the Spanish Social Security web site at www.seg-social.es/Internet_6/index.htm?ssUserText=

What documentation is required? This varies depending on the country. If there is an agreement between your country and Spain, you should check what forms or documentation you need to submit. When should I start the process? As soon as possible.

Where can I obtain further information? Contact the appropriate body in your country.

What should I do once in Catalonia? Apply for access to public healthcare. In order to be able to do this, you must:

be registered with the local council where you reside
be paying social security contributions
certify that you do not have financial resources
choose the universal access option, which involves a monthly payment of €82.33.

Where should I apply? The applicant should go to a CatSalut healthcare region office and fill out an application form requesting healthcare (Sol·licitud d'accés a l'assistència sanitària públic ).

Individuals whose right to medical care has not been recognised may nevertheless go to an emergency healthcare centre for emergency treatment, monitoring of pregnancy, birth and postnatal attention, as well as for any medical care for minors (aged under 18).
