Private Care

Despite the availability of public healthcare services, many people in Catalonia and Spain opt to take out private medical insurance. Premiums for private cover vary according to the company and type of policy.

There are a number of different kinds of private healthcare providers:

  • Private companies operating on a for-profit basis.
  • Mutual benefit associations and cooperatives that provide medical insurance cover for insured members on a not-for-profit basis.
  • Non-profit mutual societies providing social insurance.

If you decide to take out a policy with a private insurer, whether to complement public insurance cover or because you are not covered by the public system, we recommend that you consult the guide developed by the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
