International driving licence
Who needs this and why? If you obtained your driving licence in a country that is not a member state of the European Union and wish to drive in Catalonia, you will need an international driving licence.
Procedure: Within Europe the international driving licence is only required for countries not belonging to the European Union.

What to do once in Catalonia ______________________________________________________
What should I do once in Catalonia? You will need to apply for an international driving licence.
Where should I apply? Take the necessary documentation to your local Provincial Traffic Prefecture, complete the application form and pay the required fee. This procedure can only be undertaken at the Prefecture.

What documentation is required? It depends on your origin country but, in any case, you will need:
Official application form.
Original driving licence and photocopies of both sides.
Original and photocopy of identity document, passport or residence card permit featuring your NIE.
Two 35x25 mm updated photographs.
When should I begin the process? The licence is issued immediately and is valid for one year.

Road tax
Who needs to pay this and why? Irrespective of whether you have brought your own car to Catalonia or have purchased one here, you will have to pay road tax.
Procedure: You will be automatically registered to pay road tax if you buy a car in Catalonia.

Paying traffic fines, etc.
Who needs to do this and why? Anyone who has committed a traffic offence will be required to pay a fine.

What must I do? Pay the traffic fine.
Where can I do this? The places where you can pay and full instructions are indicated on the traffic fine notification.
What documentation is required? You will only need the fine notification document.
When should I pay? You will receive a discount of 50% if you pay within the period indicated in the notification. Beyond this period you will be required to pay the full amount.
