In order to be able to enter and stay in Spain/Catalonia, an EU researcher must undergo a series of procedures as established in Royal Decree 178/2003. Family members will also have to comply with these formalities if they are also EU citizens.

Family members accompanying the researcher who are non-EU nationals will be required to process their application to enter and stay in Catalonia in accordance with the specific regulations governing their nationality.

Entering and Staying in Spain

Who must complete this process and why? EU researchers who wish to enter and stay for a short period in Spain have the rights of EU citizens to freely enter, leave, travel in, and remain in Spanish territory provided they comply with the requisites of Royal Decree 178/2003.

What documentation is required?

A valid passport or identity document that identifies the nationality of the holder.
