Members of a researcher's family will be required to obtain an EU residence permit, irrespective of their nationality and provided the relationship is stable and ongoing. In specific cases, a permit may also be requested by individuals without a visa and provided the circumstances are fully justifiable.

Who must complete this process and why? Non-EU members of the family of a researcher who is a national of an EU member state.
When should the process be initiated? On a period within three months after coming to Catalonia.

Barcelona
- To apply for a residence permit you will need to make an appointment with the Immigration Office:

Tarragona

You will need to make an appointment with the Central Government Sub-Delegation in Tarragona by fax (977 99 91 72). You will be given an appointment with the Inmigration Office at No. 3, Plaça Imperial Tarraco, Tarragona (tel. 977 99 91 49). You will also be asked to bring the relevant documentation.

If you wish the Rovira i Virgili University to make the application on your behalf, send an email requesting an appointment with the Central Government Sub-Delegation to the Human Resources and Organisation Department. You will be given an appointment for the office at No. 3, Plaça Imperial Tarraco, Tarragona. You will also be asked to bring the relevant documentation.
Lleida

What documentation is required?
A printed copy of EX-16
A valid passport (original and uncut photocopy). If this has expired, bring a photocopy of the expired passport and your application for renewal.
A recent passport-size colour photo, taken against a white background (photocopies are not acceptable).
Documentary evidence of the relationship with the EU national: marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc., duly authenticated.
- If one of the spouses is Spanish, the marriage inscription in the Spanish Civil Registry (originals and photocopies of all documents), validity maximum three months from date of issue.
- If both spouses are foreigners, the marriage inscription in corresponding UE country Civil Registry, validity maximum three months from date of issue.
- In case of common-law marriage, certificate issued by the Civil Resgistry of a member of the UE/EEE state, which avoids the possibility of simultaneous registrations in that state, with an anticipation of less than three months from the date of issue.
Documentation accrediting residence of the person(s) from whom the right to family reunification derives. This includes the following documentation (original and photocopy), depending on the particular circumstances:
- Family of a Spanish citizen: valid Spanish identification document (DNI)
- Family of an EU nationalt: passport or national identity document, and NIE (foreigner identification number) or certificate of EU citizen residence
Documentary evidence (for dependent parents or children over 21 years) that the applicant is financially dependent on the EU resident in Spain (original and photocopy). This evidence must include a declaration of the financial responsibility of the EU resident in Spain for the applicant, either in the form of a notarial act or by means of a hearing and formal declaration before the authorities.
Original and photocopy of the certificate of residence for their current address issued by the local council or authority (padró), for both the applicant and the EU national.
