Official Recognition of Higher Degrees
Who should complete this process and why? Any student or graduate who wishes to obtain official recognition of his/her university qualifications in Spain.
1) Official Recognition of Higher Degrees
Official Recognition of Qualifications corresponding to the official academic degrees is established in accordance with the Royal Decree 55/2005, of 21 January, which establishes the structure of university instruction and regulates official university studies at the undergraduate level.
However, qualifications will not be accepted for recognition as equivalent to the academic degree corresponding to the new Master studies until the process of renewing the Catalogue of official university degrees has been completed (this process shall be completed by 1 October 2007).

Recognition of foreign doctoral degrees as equivalent to Spanish postgraduate degrees and qualifications
Foreign higher education degrees may be recognised as equivalent to:
- The current qualification and degree of Doctor,
where it is substituted in accordance with Royal Decree 56/2005,
of 21 January, which regulates official university postgraduate studies.
- The new official qualifications of Master and Doctor established in accordance with the abovementioned Royal Decree 56/2005
, of 21 January, with the exception of Master degrees referred to in article 8.3. In this latter case, recognition will be dealt with in accordance with the degree recognition procedure from the Catalogue of official university degrees.
- The new academic degree of Master.
However, qualifications will not be accepted for recognition as equivalent to the academic degree corresponding to the new Master studies until the process of renewing the Catalogue of official university degrees has been completed, in accordance with Section 3 of the first additional regulation of Royal Decree 55/2005. This process shall be completed by 1 October 2007.

2) Recognition of foreign doctoral degrees as equivalent to Spanish postgraduate degrees and qualifications
To departments or academic services at universities
The procedure will commence upon application
from the interested party to the University's Rector (registry office).
Recognition can not be applied for simultaneously in more than one university.
However, should the recognition be denied, the applicant may reapply in a different Spanish university.
What documentation is required?
1) Official Recognition of Higher Degrees
 Original certificate accrediting issue of the qualification.
Original academic certificate describing subjects, duration, etc.
National identity card, passport or other documentary proof of nationality.

2) Recognition of foreign doctoral degrees as equivalent to Spanish postgraduate degrees and qualifications
 Official proof of the applicant's nationality (certified photocopy of ID card or passport)
Certified photocopy of the certificate issued in recognition of the award for which official recognition is sought, or of the document authorising its issue
Certified photocopy of the academic transcript for the studies completed by the applicant in obtaining the award for which official recognition is sought, which must include the official duration, in academic years, of the study program followed, the subjects completed, the number of hours devoted to each and the grade obtained, and the grade obtained in the doctoral thesis
A copy of the doctoral thesis, together with an explanatory report written in one of the official languages of the University of Barcelona, the latter to include a summary of the doctoral thesis, offering a detailed description of its content, and the names of the examining board members who assessed the thesis. The summary of the doctoral thesis shall include an introduction and conclusions, and its length must be at least 10% of the thesis as a whole. A copy in electronic format must also be presented
Proof of payment of the relevant fees
Signed declaration to the effect that the award has not been officially recognised in Spain, that the applicant has not simultaneously sought official recognition of the same award in another university, and that the studies corresponding to the award for which official recognition is sought have not been accredited in order to continue studying in Spain.
The signed declaration must be written in one of the official languages of the University
In the event that official recognition has been sought and refused in another university, a copy of this university's ruling must also be presented
The applicant's curriculum vitae, written in one of the official languages of the University
However,
the University may require applicants to provide other documents as deemed necessary.
