Tourism in Catalonia > Lleida Tourism
Lleida is the capital of Catalonia to the west. In former times it was an Iberian settlement, a Roman town, and the seat of an important Moorish kingdom. Subsequently, under the protection of the Catalan kings, Llleida became an important bishopric and the seat of Catalonia's first university. Its strategic importance ensured that it played a central role in all the main historical conflicts that took place in the country.
