Catalan, as the official language of Catalonia, is present in all areas of Catalan society: commerce, business, culture and education (including higher education). It is spoken in an area of 68,730-km2, distributed over four European countries (Spain, France, Andorra and Italy). Over 11 million people live in this area. Two of Spain's official languages coexist in Catalonia: Catalan and Spanish. Catalan, in its different variants, is spoken in an extensive geographical area: Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Valencia, the western part of Aragon, the south of France (the Eastern Pyrenees) and the Sardinian city of Alghero.
