Catalan, as the official language of Catalonia, is present in all areas of Catalan society: commerce, business, culture and education (including higher education).

It is spoken in an area of 68,730-km2, distributed over four European countries (Spain, France, Andorra and Italy). Over 11 million people live in this area.

Two of Spain's official languages coexist in Catalonia: Catalan and Spanish. Catalan, in its different variants, is spoken in an extensive geographical area: Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Valencia, the western part of Aragon, the south of France (the Eastern Pyrenees) and the Sardinian city of Alghero.

Further information on Catalan can be found at www.intercat.gencat.net and in the Languages section of this Guide.
